Deep dive

auto-editor is a command-line video editor that removes the dead air: silence, pauses and awkward gaps are detected and cut automatically, so a raw recording becomes a tight cut without ever opening a timeline.

It is deliberately generous about hand-off — besides rendering the final file it can export to DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, ShotCut and Kdenlive project formats, or a plain clip sequence, so a human editor takes over exactly where the automation stopped.

The whole tool is public-domain (Unlicense), installs as a single pip package, and every threshold — margin, silence length, which audio track drives the cut — is a flag you can tune per project.

Use cases

Auto-cut silence from lectures, vlogs and gameplay
Batch-process recordings in CI or shell scripts
Pre-clean footage before human editing

Good for / Not ideal for

Good for

Creators sitting on hours of raw talking-head footage
Developers wiring video cleanup into automation
Anyone allergic to timeline dragging

Not ideal for

Creative storytelling edits — it removes, not composes
Heavy color/VFX work
